ITANAGAR, Apr 26: The Patent Information Centre under Arunachal Pradesh State Council for Science & Technology in collaboration with Department of Law, Rajiv Gandhi University organized a daylong workshop on Geographical Indication to mark the occasion of Intellectual Property Day on Wednesday. The program was attended by students, several community-based organizations namely Galo Welfare Society, Nyishi Elite Society, Adi Bane Kebang, Tagin Welfare Society, Mishmi Welfare Society, Tai-Khamti Heritage & Literature Society, Tanw Supun Dukun, Monpa Mimang Tsokpa, designers, and faculty members. 
Er. Bamang Apo, Joint Director ,A.P.State Council for Science& Technology explained the theme of the workshop and welcomed all  community-based organizations, and participants to the program. Professor R.C Parida, Dean Faculty of law highlighted the uniqueness of the tribal handlooms of Arunachal Pradesh and stressed the need to include more in the Geographical Indication list. Professor S.K Nayak also enlightened the participants about the historical importance of Geographical Indication. 
The technical session was opened with a presentation on Basic concepts and the importance of G.I. by Dr.Topi Basar wherein she also pointed out the need for framing a comprehensive IPR policy of the State in the light of National IPR policy. Dr Basar also highlighted the pivotal role of CBOs in GI registration and opined on steps needed to be taken for  successful GI registration. 
The key attraction of the workshop was the presentation by Dr. Abba Pulu, Assistant Professor, Indira Gandhi Govt. College, Tezu on his experience of securing GI for Idu Mishmi textiles which took him more than two years of diligent efforts. He narrated how he collected the documentary evidence dating back to the year 1860 to establish proof of origin or historical record. He urged upon the CBOs to focus more on GI and advised the  young lawyers of State to explore the field of GI. Another resource person Siddhartha Devnath, an IP professional and expert spoke on the practical aspects of G.I and mentioned various cases of GI infringement and how to identify genuine GI goods in market and commercial potential of GI. 
The Program ended with an interactive session and vote of thanks by Terpo Ronya, Scientist -C of Patent Information Centre, A.P State Council for Science and Technology.
