DOIMUKH, Apr 3: The Nyishi Indigenous Faith & Cultural Society (NIFCS) has celebrated its 18th Foundation day with great pomp and show despite heavy rainfall here at Doimukh today.

Delegates from different parts of state enthusiastically participated in the cultural extravaganza and other activities organised to mark the celebration.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Minister Urban Development, town planning etc Nabam Rebia advocated for preserving the age old cultural heritage.

Appreciating the NIFCS for carrying forward the noble efforts in preserving the tradition and culture despite financial crunch, Rebia said that “where there is will there is way” and exhorted the NIFCS to work more for betterment of society.

Referring to the report of enlistment of few local dialects on verge of extinction by UNESCO, Rebia said the development is a matter of great concern and every individual should come forward and act on their part to save the indigenous identity before it vanishes.

Guest of Honour, Joint Director (Art & Culture) Jomnya Siram in his address said that “Donyi Poloism” will never die as the religion is a genuine part of indigenous tribal life.

Emphasizing that culture, tradition and dialects are inter related in tribal community which needs to be maintained for our identity, he requested the community leaders to work out formalities by which the ‘Namlo’ and ‘Ganging’ can be united.

NIFCS President, Pai Dawe called upon the gathering to shun western culture and appealed all to realise the importance of traditions and cultural values. He particularly exhorted the youth to become forerunners in protecting the rich cultural heritage.

A Nyishi Newsletter “Nyishi Pui” was also released on the occasion, which was followed by  community feast, felicitation programme and discussion on community development and preservation of tradition and culture.
