PASIGHAT, Mar 18: 

 

As a part of their continued efforts to eradicate drug menace from the district, the Women Against Social Evils (WASE) organized a massive anti-drug awareness programme at Ngopok village under Mebo Sub-Division today to sensitize villagers about the ill effects of drugs and its peddling and illegal sale of IMFL.

 

Inaugurating the campaign, East Siang Deputy Commissioner Tamiyo Tatak said that the district administration is ever ready to extend all possible help whenever sought for, and added that legal action would be taken against those who indulge in poppy, ganja cultivation, selling and using of drugs including illegal selling of IMFL without licenses.

 

 

Tatak appealed the villagers to let their children concentrate on their studies and engage them in productive works during vacation so that they don’t roam around freely. The DC while calling upon all sections of the society to support anti-drugs movement for complete eradication of drug menace for betterment of society has also advised the villagers to intensify their intelligence network to identify the ill doers. They should monitor constantly and update administration and NGOs like WASE and ABK (WW) when any such illegal activities are being found in their villages.

 

The DC on the occasion has also informed that East Siang administration has imposed blanket ban on illegal timber operation, hunting and fishing. He laid stress on cleanliness, education, health and hygiene and further urged the gathering to cooperate the administration to preserve flora fauna including all natural resources for a better tomorrow, for future generation.

 

ADC Mebo, Yemling Tayeng highlighted the various achievements and briefed how youths of his Mebo Sub-Division were made aware of the harmful effects of illicit substances. Superintendent of Tax & Excise, K. Komut reflected the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, saying that selling and using of drugs is a heinous crime, and any person found indulging in such activities can be booked under this Act which is non-bailable offence with penalty.

 

President and General Secretary WASE Omem Ering and Jaya Tasung Moyong respectively added that lack of understanding of the adverse effects and addictive nature of these substances posed a major public health challenge. Everyone has a part to play in protecting the youth from dangerous substances. We are doing our best as a mother to eradicate such growing social menace from the district and our effort will continue to save our children from drugs and IMFL which has already taken countless lives in the recent past, added WASE sources.
