ITANAGAR, Sep 8:The Students of Department of Mass Communication, Rajiv Gandhi University on Friday held a peaceful rally within the university campus to register their protest against the murder of senior Journalist, Gauri Lankesh, who was shot dead by unidentified men outside her residence at Bengaluru on midnight of September 5 last.

Led by Rajiv Gandhi University Students’ Union (RGUSU), about hundreds of students marched around the university campus chanting “Stop Killing journalist and stop killing democracy”, which later culminated at the auditorium of RGU.

Strongly condemning the cowardly act, Head of the Department (MC), Professor K Kabi said that the culprits involved in the heinous crime must not be spared and authority should award stringent punishment to give justice to late Lankesh.

He appealed all section of society as well as people of Arunachal Pradesh to come forward against such barbaric act which in a way is murdering democracy as well as the voice of truth.

 President, RGUSU, Giogi Aja in his address said that killing and attacks on media person in and outside the state has become a trend nowadays and asserted that it is the media persons who often fall prey to such atrocities despite fighting for betterment of society.

“It is the journalists who mostly sacrifice their lives in order to bring the truth in front of the world that too without asking anything in return, but at the same time they are the ones who always receive threats and attacks,” Aja added.

Stating the country lost a precious voice with the death of Lankesh, Aja said that the sad incident which is an indirect attack on Freedom of press and democracy need strong condemnation from all sections of society and appealed all to respect the contribution of media.
