Itanagar, Mar 22: A high-intensity shootout erupted at Hollongi road as police attempted to apprehend Rohit Basumatary, a notorious interstate drug kingpin operating across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and other northeastern states. The encounter resulted in two police personnel sustaining bullet hits, though they were saved by their bulletproof jackets, while the accused was shot in the leg and captured.
DIGP Itanagar, Tumme Amo (IPS), confirmed the incident, stating that the operation was conducted based on prior intelligence about the movement of drug traffickers in the region.
The operation was executed by a team of police officers led by and SDPO Itanagar Kengo Dirchi under the supervision of SP Capital Rohit Rajbir Singh (IPS) with the objective of intercepting the accused’s vehicle and preventing the transportation of narcotics into Arunachal Pradesh.
SP Itanagar, Rohit Rajbir Singh stated, acting on the intelligence input, Arunachal Police had set up barricades and vehicle checks in the Hollongi area during the evening hours. The suspect, who was traveling in an Assam-registered vehicle, attempted to break through the barricade, crashing into an electric pole after losing control of his car. When officers moved in to apprehend him, Basumatary opened fire on the police team, striking SDPO Dirchi’s vehicle before fleeing into a nearby jungle.
The police team, including SDPO Dirchi, OC K Yangfo, and Sub-Inspector Tamu Bagang, immediately pursued the accused into the dense forest area. As the chase intensified, Basumatary fired at Sub-Inspector Bagang, but the officers, having anticipated the suspect’s possession of firearms, were equipped with bulletproof jackets, which prevented any serious injuries.
In retaliation, the police fired back, injuring Basumatary in his right leg, following which he was overpowered and taken into custody. SP Rohit Rajbir Singh confirmed that the accused was immediately shifted to R.K. Mission Hospital for medical treatment, under police supervision, before his formal arrest.
Singh also revealed that Basumatary is a key drug supplier in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, wanted in multiple drug-related cases across both states. The police had been tracking his activities for the past ten days, leading to the meticulously planned operation at Hollongi.
Speaking on the successful operation, SP Singh warned drug traffickers against smuggling narcotics into Arunachal Pradesh, assuring citizens that the Capital Police remains highly active and fully equipped to combat drug-related crimes with an iron hand.
Additionally, during the encounter, one police personnel, identified as Manish, also sustained injuries but is reported to be in stable condition.
