Itanagar, Jan 20: The ‘Road to Safety National Capacity Building Programme’ for the traffic police officials of Arunachal Pradesh was conducted jointly by Diageo India and Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) here in the state capital recently.
State DGP  R.P. Upadhyaya, DIGP (HQ) Madhur Verma and Advisor & Principal Faculty IRTE, Delhi MS Upadhye, IPS Retd were the Chief Guests and inaugurated the programme in presence of President, IRTE Dr Rohit Baluja and other senior officials. 
The two-day programme trained over 80 transport and traffic police officials from state. The programme was in line with the recently launched Hamara Arunachal Abhiyan (HAA) which aims to involve all sections of  society in managing law and order in state. One of the sub-campaigns of HAA includes traffic management which coincides with the Capacity Building Training Programme. With the objective to create awareness and impart training, the programme provided the necessary skill sets to investigate and analyse road accidents and take necessary steps to mitigate their occurrence. The modules covered in included Codes of Practice, Codes & Standards, Role of Police in Traffic Management and Legal Instruments dealing with Traffic and its Violation. 
Speaking on the initiative, Chief Strategy and Corporate Affairs Officer, Diageo India Abanti Sankaranarayanan   said the initiative aims to create necessary impact to address the important issues concerning road safety in the state. President, IRTE expressed confidence that with this training, Arunachal will see reduction in traffic fatalities from the current figures of 175 (2018) as reported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
The Diageo India ‘Road to Safety’ initiative together with IRTE is currently in its 5th year and since 2014, it has trained over 5000 police officials and 7000 other participants which included Navy Officers, Engineers, Transport Officers and Commercial Vehicle Drivers.
