ITANAGAR, May 18: In a tragic incident, a zoo attendant was mauled to death by a tiger while carrying out routine duties at the Biological Park (Zoo) Itanagar on Tuesday afternoon.
The RFO (Curator) Itanagar Zoo, Raya Flago informed that the deceased, 35-year-old P Karmakar was a contingency staff of the zoo since last eight years. Karmakar was an expert in maintaining tigers and its enclosures and he was on his routine duties today when the unfortunate incident happened, he said.
Colleagues of late Karmakar who were on duty informed that the incident occurred when Karmakar went for routine checking and was about to clean the drinking water container of the particular cage and probably forgot to close the third gate which is one of the most important gates of the enclosure, unfortunately, the tiger attacked him from the back, the RFO said.
Elaborating Flago informed  that normally there are five attendees for the tiger including the deceased and they visit the enclosure on roster basis in twos or threes but today he ( Karmakar) went alone while the other members were headed for lunch. When the others realised that Karmakar didn’t return for lunch they rushed to the enclosure and found that the third gate was open with a pool of blood in the area. Sensing some untoward incident, they closed the gate and searched for the deceased, later he was found lifeless with wounds in the jungle area of the enclosure.
Expressing grief over the incident, Flago informed that the incident has been reported to the police, and they will investigate the matter accordingly. He also added that the body will be handed over to the family members at Laluk, Dekhiajuli village, Assam after postmortem.
