Ruksin, Feb 15: Tension prevailed at Niglok in East Siang district after villagers opposed the resumption of work by M/s Aether Alloys LLP at the Industrial Growth Centre, citing environmental pollution concerns.
Despite a directive from the Gauhati High Court, Itanagar Bench, instructing the state government to ensure smooth access to the factory, local residents blocked the road at Ruksin and stopped material-laden trucks.
The company had earlier filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking protection for its industrial activities. Villagers alleged that the proposed silicon factory would harm air and water quality and pose health risks. They stated that operations would not be allowed until environmental safeguards are ensured.
District officials attempted to escort the trucks on Sunday morning but faced strong resistance. The situation remained tense, and the administration initiated dialogue with community leaders to resolve the issue while complying with the court’s order.
