ITANAGAR, Apr 9: In a profound display of grief and solidarity, the Arunachal Teachers Association (ATA) Itanagar Capital Region, in collaboration with the Arunachal Teachers Association (ATA) Central Executive Committee, has announced a peaceful candlelight rally to honour the memory of late Yapi Potom. A Junior Teacher at Government Secondary School, Chimpu, Potom’s recent killing has sent shockwaves throughout the state, prompting this urgent call for collective mourning and action. The procession is scheduled to take place on April 10, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, commencing from the Akashdeep Complex and culminating at the Tennis Court in IG Park. This solemn march is intended to serve as a high-profile tribute to a dedicated educator and a public demand for swift, uncompromising justice.
The teaching fraternity across Arunachal Pradesh has expressed deep outrage over the tragedy, describing the loss of Potom as a devastating blow to the academic community and the state’s educational fabric. By organizing this joint rally, the ATA and its Capital Region unit aim to highlight the urgent need for enhanced safety for educators and to pressure authorities to ensure the legal process against the perpetrator is fast-tracked. Participants, including fellow teachers, students, and concerned citizens, are expected to march in silence, using the glow of their candles to symbolize the light Potom brought to her classroom and the void her untimely passing has left behind.
Local authorities have been urged by the association to provide a transparent update on the ongoing investigation. While preliminary reports suggest progress in the case, the ATA remains steadfast in its call for the highest level of punishment for those responsible. As the capital prepares for the vigil on Friday afternoon, the overarching message from the organizers is clear: the community will not remain silent until justice for late Yapi Potom is fully realised and the safety of "nation-builders" is guaranteed across the region.
