KANUBARI, Jan 25: Thousands of people from all walks of life today took out a mass protest rally here demanding from the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Corporation Limited (APFCL) all the assured benefits promised to the land owners of Mopa tea estate as per the agreement signed in 1992.
The protest rally was organized by Longhua, Mopakhat and Sangsatham United Society (LMSUS), district students’ organization and the villagers from Dasatong where the Mopa tea estate is located.
Speaking to reporters, LMSUS Convener Manlem Jamikham informed that the said agreement was signed between the APCFL and the villagers for the 92-acre land which is yet to materialise and a 7-day ultimatum has been served to the APFCL for fulfilling the demands. “Until and unless a solution is provided, the villagers will continue to protest,” he said, adding that the villagers want a meeting within the next 7 days to resolve the issue amicably. Jamikham also said that the Mopa tea estate will remain closed until arbitration by the APFCL. “We have served the ultimatum to the Managing Director (MD) of the APFCL to bring a solution,” he informed. Meanwhile, Dasatong Gram Panchayat member Tingtun Wangjen said that the APFCL had earlier agreed to share land revenue as well as profit accruing from tea production.
“The agreement was signed way back in 1992, but the villagers are yet to receive their profit share and until the state government and APFCL come up with a proper solution, the tea estate shall remain closed,” he said.
