Tawang, Oct 27: The draw of lottery for the reservation of Zila Parishad and Gram Panchayat seats in Tawang district was successfully conducted today. The exercise was carried out to ensure one third reservation for women in the Panchayati Raj Institutions.
The process was supervised by Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer, Tawang, Namgyal Angmo, and witnessed by MLA Tawang Namgey Tsering, Zila Parishad Chairperson Leki Gombu, Addl. DCs of Jang and Lungla, Hakraso Kri and Tashi Dhondup respectively, member secretaries of Gram Panchayats, representatives of various political parties, and members of the general public.
In his welcome address, Addl. DC-cum-District Panchayat Development Officer, Rinchin Leta, briefed the gathering on the purpose and procedure of the draw. He informed that to ensure the process remained free, fair, and transparent, two independent witnesses — Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee, Tawang, Norbu Drema, and President, Tawang District Youth Welfare Society (NGO), Sonam Nordzin — were invited to observe the proceedings.
He further informed that Tawang district comprises 87 Gram Panchayats and 311 Gram segments.
Speaking on the occasion, DC Tawang, emphasized that the draw was being conducted in a transparent manner in the presence of independent witnesses and all stakeholders. She also urged the members present to raise any doubts or queries during the process for immediate clarification.
The draw began with the reservation of Zila Parishad seats, and accordingly, out of the six Zila Parishad seats in the district, two seats — Tawang and Zemithang-Dudungkhar — were reserved for women. Subsequently, draws were conducted for all 87 Gram Panchayats across the district.
