ITANAGAR, Aug 25:  The Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU-Apex) has submiited a memorandum to the state government demanding immediate removal of paramilitary personnel from Siang and Upper Siang districts, eviction of illegal encroachers from government school premises, and revocation of suspension orders against student leaders.
In its letter addressed to the Chief Minister, AdiSU expressed deep anguish over what it termed as the “arbitrary and inhuman treatment” of the people of Siang by the Deputy Commissioner. The Union alleged that the authorities had deployed paramilitary forces without proper public consultation for conducting the Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) under the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), creating panic among villagers.
AdiSU has further alleged government agencies of allowing illegal encroachment on school lands in Boleng, Pangin, Kaying, and Pessing, thereby undermining educational infrastructure. The Union also condemned the suspension of eight Gaon Burahs (village chiefs) and student activists for voicing opposition to these moves.
“Our people are on the verge of being ousted from their ancestral lands. The government’s unilateral actions without public consent are degrading the situation to untold vagaries and destitution,” the memorandum stated.
AdiSU warned that if its demands are not met within 15 days, the Union will be compelled to launch a democratic mass movement, holding the government responsible for “all losses and serious repercussions.”
The key demands of AdiSU include the immediate removal of paramilitary forces from Siang and Upper Siang districts, eviction of illegal encroachers from government school premises, revocation of suspension orders against student activists and Gaon Burahs, halt of all PFR activities under SUMP until villagers are convinced and duly consulted.
