PASIGHAT, Sep 22: The second round of meeting for building a public consensus for declaring the western side of D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary as ‘Eco-Sensitive Zone’ was held on Tuesday here at the Kebang Hall of Sille-Oyan CO office under the chairmanship of ADC Ruksin Tajing Jonnom.
The meeting which was convened by the Divisional Forest Officer of D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary Tasang Taga was attended by the GBs, Village Secretaries, Panchayat leaders and other stakeholders of the Sille-Oyan Circle. The DFO Wildlife while briefing on the necessity to declare the western side as Eco-Sensitive Zone said it will act as a "shock absorber" for the protected areas. ADC advised the stakeholders to cooperate with the administration in protecting the sanctuary.
After a threadbare discussion, the meeting unanimously decided to declare the western boundary of the sanctuary comprising a minimum of 500 meters as Eco-Sensitive Zone. It was also decided to constitute a committee to identify the proposed ESZ boundary on the field with the actual boundary of the sanctuary comprising members from the fringe villages. As a part of the consensus, activities such as commercial mining, saw mills, industries causing pollution (air, water, soil, noise etc.), establishment of major hydroelectric projects (HEP), commercial use of wood, tourism activities like hot-air ballooning, production and discharge of solid and hazardous waste have been prohibited within the proposed ESZ.

Cutting of trees, establishment of hotels and resorts, commercial use of natural water, erection of electrical cables, drastic change of agriculture system, e.g. adoption of heavy technology, pesticides etc. and widening of roads have been earmarked as regulated activities. The activities that will be permitted are ongoing agricultural/horticultural practices, rainwater harvesting, organic farming, use of renewable energy sources and adoption of green technology for all purposes.
