Itanagar, Nov 30: The stage is set for the 12th General Elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions and the 3rd Municipal Elections for Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) and Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) on December 15 next.
Following scrutiny of nominations and the last date of withdrawal of nominations on November 29, the total number of contesting candidates are 440 for 186 Zilla Parishad constituencies, 39 for 16 IMC wards (Ward numbers 4, 6, 7 & 19 uncontested) and 21 for 8 PMC wards.
There are 13 GP constituencies where no nominations have been filed and 14 GP constituencies where the nominations of all candidates were rejected during the scrutiny process. Further, polling in one GP constituency (2-Dumba Singpho GP constituency) has been countermanded due to death of a validly nominated candidate.
The SEC further informed that candidates have been elected uncontested in 59 Zilla Parishad constituencies [BJP: 58 & NPP: 01] and 4 wards in IMC [all BJP].
The State Election Commission (SEC) had notified the schedule for the 12th General Elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions and the 3rd Municipal Elections for Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) and Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) on November 17. Consequently, public notices were issued by the Returning Officers concerned for election to 245 Zilla Parishad constituencies, 8182 Gram Panchayat constituencies, 20 wards of IMC and 8 wards of PMC on the same day.
