BOLENG, Jul 11: A mass cleanliness drive cum sensitization programme on sustainable waste management “Clean and Green Siang” was launched in five towns of Siang district-- Boleng, Pangin, Kaying, Rumgong and Riga. 
MLA (Pangin-Boleng), Ojing Tasing launched the program in the district headquarters Boleng along with the Deputy Commissioner Atul Tayeng. 
MLA (Rumgong) TalemTaboh launched the program at Kaying in liaison with the nodal departments of UD & Housing as well as PHE & Water supply. The program witnessed mass participation by the HoOs, government officers, staffs, Panchayati Raj leaders, local Self-Help Groups and public of Boleng who conducted cleanliness cum plantation drive. 
The DC Siang elaborated that this refresher program is in consonance with the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan and should not be a one-time only cleanliness drive. Rather, it should be adopted by each and every citizen of Siang district to consciously keep the district clean and green, he said appealing to the public to adhere to the recently enacted ban on single-use plastics for a cleaner Siang district. He highlighted the importance of overall behavioural change in the public for sustainable waste management and stated that this program should be conducted at least twice every month at ward and sector level. He further said that the cleanest ward/ sector will be identified and felicitated in national celebrations like Independence Day and Republic Day. He also appealed to the public to adopt household latrines with septic tanks and avoid releasing faecal wastes directly into streams and drains. 
MLA Tasing also stressed that cleanliness drive should not be a one-time event but a lifestyle change towards adopting cleanliness. He appealed to the local self-help groups and mothers for active participation in all wards and sectors. "Mothers are the sole hope for reforming Boleng in respect to cleanliness and drug de-addiction", the MLA said urging the mothers of Boleng town to come forward and participate actively. He also spoke on the importance of afforestation and appealed to the public to plant more trees.
The event was followed by distribution of re-useable fabric  bags to shopkeepers, SHGs and public as an incentive to give up single use plastics and adopt cloth bags for sustainable waste management in Siang district. The program culminated after mass cleanliness drive and plantation drives in the towns.
