NAHARLAGUN, Dec 28: In a major breakthrough, Naharlagun Police arrested Kurian Pallikunnel John, a 64-year-old resident of Putthupally Village, Kottayam District, Kerala, in connection with the water tank tragedy  case at St. Alphonso Public School, Naharlagun. The accused was apprehended on December 27 near Guwahati Airport after an intense four-day interstate operation.
The case, registered as Naharlagun PS Case No. 154/24 under Sections 105/106(1)/125(b)/3(5) BNS, revolves around alleged negligence in the supervision of the water tank construction at the school. John, who served as the Hostel Supervisor, was reportedly responsible for overseeing the project, as per the statement of, Shaji Cherian, the school principal.
The accused absconded on the day of the incident, 14th December 2024, prompting an extensive search operation. Acting on a Non-Bailable Warrant of Arrest (NBWA) issued by the Hon’ble Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Yupia, Inspector Krishnendu Dev, Officer-in-Charge of Naharlagun Police Station, along with Constable D. Borah, embarked on a mission to locate and arrest him.
Their pursuit took them across multiple states, including Kerala, Kozhikode, Bengaluru, and finally Guwahati. Despite the accused’s attempts to evade arrest by frequently changing locations, the Naharlagun Police team successfully tracked him down. The arrest was executed with assistance from Borjhar Police Outpost personnel.
The accused’s family has been notified, and he will be produced before the Hon’ble Court of JMFC, Yupia.
Superintendent of Police, ICR Naharlagun,  Mihin Gambo, praised the tireless efforts of Inspector Krishnendu Dev and his team, lauding their commitment to justice. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SPDO) Naharlagun, Rishi Longdo, also provided critical oversight during the operation,stated a release.
