ITANAGAR, Jul 18: As a part of the celebration of National Reading Month (June 19 to July 18), the Department of Public Libraries conducted a book review competition among the school children at the State Central Library here on Wednesday.
The month-long nationwide programme, initiated by NITI Aayog in collaboration with concerned institutions at the state level, aimed to inculcate in the citizens the habit of reading.
Altogether, 46 students from five schools of the Capital Complex took part in the ‘book review’ competition. Earlier, a demonstration session on how to properly look for a book in the correct section of the library and the proper way to review it was given.
Attending the event, Rajiv Gandhi University’s Botany professor Dr Sumpam Tangjang stated that the youths of the state are in a vulnerable position without the knowledge imparted by active and lasting reading. The recent CBSE results are a proof to that. He stressed on the importance of reading in building a strong foundation of a child and in fostering an innate cultural development within. He also appreciated the State Central Library for the initiative in promoting reading culture in the state.
Also in attendance was Under Secretary (Public Libraries) Mabi Taipodia Jini, who spoke of the intrusive nature of social media and urged the students to spend some time everyday to read a book for pleasure.
Later, the Director of Public Libraries Jotom Borang and other officers presented the awards to the winners of the competition. Raj Nalo and Phurbi Dolma Nago of Govt Middle School, Niti Vihar won the first and second prizes respectively followed by Mariya Singkom of Govt Middle School, C-Sector (third), Tania Tayo of Govt Sec School, P-Sector (fourth) and Jumon Borah of Govt Middle School, C-Sector (fifth).
