Rono Hills, May 29: Orchid database of Arunachal Pradesh was launched today on the Rajiv Gandhi University website by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Saket Kushwaha in the presence of faculty members and research scholars. 
The database is a compilation of available published resources and the scientific information provided by Orchid research group of the Botany department, Orchid Research and Development Centre, Tippi and State Forest Research Institute, Itanagar, and provides information on classification, distribution, salient morphology, usages, established tissue culture techniques and herbarium details. The creation of the database was one of the objectives of a DBT-GoI funded research project entitled “Orchid Bioresources of the North-east India- Conservation, database development and information networking”. It was jointly prepared by the Centre of Bioinformatics facility and the Department of Botany of the University under the guidance of Principal investigator Prof. R. K. Singh.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Kushwaha highlighted the importance of orchids, its demand in the both national and international markets and the potential of the state to become a leading producer and supplier. He appreciated the efforts of the research group and all the contributors and appealed to other researchers of the North-east India towards further enrichment of the database and create adequate facilities to promote entrepreneurship on orchid cultivation.
