Rono Hills, Jan 12: Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), in collaboration with the Rajiv Gandhi University Employees’ Association, successfully organized the “Run for Swadeshi” to mark National Youth Day-2026, commemorating the 164th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, along with the rest of the nation.
The programme commenced with floral tributes to the portrait of Swami Vivekananda followed by the 2KM mini marathon run participated by students, teaching and non-teaching staff of the University.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. J. Sahoo, the Vice-Chancellor (i/c), RGU highlighted the objectives of the event and emphasized the importance of strengthening the nation’s economy through self-reliance approach realizing Swami Vivekananda’s vision of self-reliance. He remarked that Swadeshi was central to Vivekananda’s philosophy, inspiring youth to believe in indigenous strength while upholding unity in diversity. The Joint Registrar of RGU Dr. David Pertin administered the Swadeshi pledge, and urged the participants to internalize Swami Vivekananda’s ideals by supporting local weavers, farmers, and artisans. The “Run for Swadeshi” event witnessed enthusiastic participation across various categories, reflecting the vibrant spirit of National Youth Day. In the Student Male Category, John Gyadi, Job Gyadi, and Lobsang Jimba secured the first, second, and third positions respectively, while Ngagam Yoka and Rina Taba stood first and second in the Student Female Category. In the Non-Teaching Senior Male Category, Joram Har, Dinesh Rawat, and Sujeet Biswakarma bagged the first, second, and third prizes respectively. The Teaching Male Category saw Lokpa Tamang clinching the first position, while Maga Neru secured the top spot in the Teaching Female Category. The Open Category, marked by keen competition, witnessed Laba Sarkar, Rajen Mallik, and Baba Tamang finishing first, second, and third respectively in the Open Male Category, whereas Teli Yabang and Manjuri Handique were adjudged winner and runner-up in the Open Female Category. Later, all winners securing first, second, and third positions were felicitated with trophies and certificates in recognition of their achievement.
Earlier, the Organizing Chairman of the Run for Swadeshi-2026 and President of Rajiv Gandhi University Employees’ Association (RGUEA) Nich Bapu, formally delivered the welcome address while the Organizing Secretary and General Secretary of the RGUEA Eswar Kr. Sunar with a vote of thanks expressed gratitude to all participants and organizers for making the event a success.
