ITANAGAR Jan 23: To give concrete shape to the State Cabinet’s vision of a future-ready Itanagar–Naharlagun Twin Capital City, Minister for Urban Affairs, Land Management & Civil Aviation Balo Raja on Friday convened a high-level meeting at the Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC), Civil Secretariat.
The meeting was held as a follow-up to the Cabinet’s first sitting on June 13, 2024, where effective traffic management was identified among the 24 high-priority decisions. Emphasising ease of movement and public safety, the minister said outdated traffic regulation systems must be replaced with modern, technology-driven solutions.
Senior officials and  MLA Itanagar Techi Kasso, Mayor IMC, Chief Engineer (Highways), OSD to CM, ADC ICR, DSP (Traffic), Directors of Town Planning and ULB, and Smart City Mission officials participated in the deliberations.
The meeting resolved to introduce automated traffic signals integrated with AI-enabled cameras at key junctions from Chimpu to Lok-Bhavan Tinali on a pilot basis. AI cameras installed under the Smart City Mission will be synchronised to detect violations and issue e-challans directly to violators and transport authorities, initially on a one-month trial.
It was also decided that the ICCC will be handed over to the State Police for round-the-clock monitoring, while strict enforcement of traffic rules, lane discipline on four-lane highways, removal of outlived public transport vehicles, and regulation of parking would be ensured.
The minister stressed the need for public awareness campaigns through FM radio and social media, relocation of street vendors and transport stands, removal of illegal structures along roads, and strict enforcement of building by-laws. Plans for automated multi-level parking facilities at Zero Point and near the main post office were also reviewed.
The meeting concluded with directions for immediate implementation of spot verification reports to ensure smoother, safer and more efficient traffic flow across the capital region.
