ITANAGAR, May 30:To counter the rising cases of road accidents that Arunachal Pradesh has been witnessing in the last few years, the Road Safety Authority of Arunachal conducted a workshop on road safety at Banquet Hall here today.
Pointing out that a driver’s negligence is primarily the reason for road accidents, Minister, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Alo Libang urged people behind the wheels to take precautionary measures. Asserting that road safety is not the sole responsibility of the government, he said the public needs to be responsible as well when it comes to road safety. Libang also underscored the need to have appropriate signboards cautioning the drivers especially in difficult terrains like Arunachal Pradesh.
Stressing on genuine Driving License, Parliamentary Secretary (Transport), Likha Saaya asked the Police department to arrest those with fake driving license. Saying that a lot is yet to be done, he urged the NGOs to take up the issue of road safety and create awareness among the public. He said there is a lack of initiative to build it in a systematic way.
While welcoming the participants, Commissioner Transport Bolung Siram, informed that road accident has been a leading cause of death primarily because of human error and a lack of awareness on road safety. He said it is important that there is a strong coordination between all the stakeholder departments namely Transport, PWD, Traffic Police, National Highways Authority and Health to ensure proper road safety. Siram hoped that the workshop would be an excellent forum for these departments to discuss, share and exchange views and ideas.
Consultant Ministry of Road, Transport and Highway, Tamali Ganguly, reiterated that road safety does not only concern the Government but needs the cooperation of the general public. She said there is a need to impose proper rules and regulations. Ganguly emphasized on the need to technically deal with the issue of road accidents especially in accident prone areas, along with providing awareness regarding it. She later urged the five departments to fulfill their responsibility with sincerity and constructively falling which creating an awareness will have no impact.
Earlier, School children and Traffic wardens took out a rally to create awareness about road safety.
