ITANAGAR, Mar 7: Naharlagun police recovered a huge amount of stolen items including local ornaments and gold jewelry that went missing from Nigam colony of Naharlagun on February 15 last. The case which seemed to be a blind one at first was solved based on CCTV footage which showed a dent on a blue coloured scooter thereby leading to the arrest.
Speaking to media, Superintendent of Police, Itanagar Capital Region, Jimmy Chiram disclosed that the recovery was made on Friday from the house of one Tok Changriang at NEEPCO Colony, Doimukh.
“The recovery was made after the accused was arrested earlier on the same day from Naharlagun market area,” he added.
Police say the incident was a blind case as there was no clue of the theft. However following the CCTV footage, a dent in the front hood of a blue Honda Activa scooter became a hint for the case and on this basis the whole investigation started.
“Our police team headed by SDPO Naharlagun Rike Kamsi, OC K Yangfo, SI- AK Pandey and SI SS Jha, HC Iter Ngomdir and constables Pradeep Das and Millo Khokum and along with SDPO Itanagar K Sikom searched all blue coloured Honda Activa scooter in the Capital region and zeroed down to one belonging to Tok Changriang whose car had the dent seen in the CCTV footage from the crime scene.
After he was detained in the Naharlagun market area, his house was searched from where all the recoveries were made," said the SP. Informing that, the accused is a habitual offender, the SP said that a hammer, plier and a jack was recovered from his house which he apparently used in breaking into houses to execute the crime. He further informed that that the house of the accused was under surveillance with CCTV cameras on four sides. “He had been conducting surveillance of his own,” he said.
Estimating the recovered ornaments to be of Rs 1.1 crore out of the total Rs 1.4 crore worth of the stolen items, the SP assured that the remaining jewelry worth Rs 30 lakhs would also be recovered soon.
A case No.33/21 under Section 380 has been registred against the accused, added SP Chiram.
