ITANAGAR, Aug 23: In a major breakthrough against drug menace, Chimpu Police on Friday arrested two individuals, including a student leader cum local journalist, during a naka checking at Chimpu Check Post. The operation was launched based on a credible tip-off and executed under strict legal protocols.
The naka checking was carried out under the supervision of SDPO Itanagar, DySP Kengo Dirchi, along with OC Inspector N. Nishant and the Chimpu Police team, under the close monitoring of SP Itanagar, Jummar Basar. For legal compliance, Special Judicial Magistrate (Narcotics), Oli Koyu, and an independent witness were also present during the operation.
The arrested individuals have been identified as William Tana Tara (27 years) – Secretary (Research & Documentation), All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU), and holder of a Press ID card of APN Live. Biki Phukan (28 years) – a non-APST resident of H-Sector, Itanagar, originally hailing from North Lakhimpur, Assam.
From the possession of Tara, police recovered more than 10 vials of heroin (2.5 gms net weight), 4 empty vials, cash, a press ID card, and suspected incriminating materials.
Both accused were taken into custody, and a case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act has been registered against them. Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the contraband and identify the larger network involved.
