YUPIA, Sep 2: Deputy Commissioner Papum Pare Cheechung Chukhu announced cash incentives for bringing to his knowledge video recordings of any illegal activities pertaining to drug peddling, gambling, illegal sale of liquor etc during a meeting held to discuss the regulation of markets of Papum Pare District on Thursday.
The meeting which was attended by the administrative officers, police, market welfare association members and student unions deliberated on issues like late night opening of shops/gumtis to sell liquors illegally, rampant gambling activities in weekly markets and other market areas of the district and illegal activities along the river banks of Dikrong river and the railway tracks.
The DC asked the SP, ADCs and SDOs to map out the probable locations where gambling and drug related activities are likely to be held so that regular patrolling can be carried out in such places. He also suggested seeking the cooperation of the student bodies and NGOs to help fight social menace.
He further assured that strict notices will be issued to the owners of the weekly markets to refrain from any kind of illegal activities, unhygienic garbage disposal and inadequate revenue payment to the government.
Informing about the ‘Know Your Kith & Kin'  initiative by the District Administration, the DC informed that ‘under this initiative all concerned public should post ‘Know Your Kith & Kin' on social media platforms at 10.00 PM every evening to “alert and remind parents and guardians to check whether their children and wards are at home or not. “ He hoped that this initiative will act as an instrument to prevent young people from engaging in illegal activities such as drug consumption.
Speaking on the occasion, SP, Papum Pare (Rural) Taru Gusar called for joint and concerted efforts of all the stakeholders and emphasised on the importance of the local people as the 'eyes and ears' of the law enforcing bodies.
“The police department is emboldened because of the cooperation and inputs from the local people," SP Gusar added.
Further, taking into account the concern raised by Gollo Lento, President, All Papum Pare District Students Union (APPDSU), over the porous border at Gumto under Doimukh Sub-Division which is a gateway for outsiders without Inner Line Permit, smuggling of drugs and ferrying of stolen vehicles, SP Gusar informed that, regular patrolling is being carried out along the railway tracks but stated that narrowness of the Gumto inter-state highway acts as an impediment in the strict checking of vehicles as it gives rise to huge traffic congestion. However modalities are being worked out to ensure strict checking, he added.
He also exhorted the NGOs and the student leaders attending the meeting to identify doubtful spots along the Dikrong River and the railway tracks so that patrolling in these areas can be intensified.
