KOLORIANG, May 4: In a tragic road mishap, one person is feared dead and another injured when a pickup truck laden with iron steel rods veered off the road and plummeted into the turbulent waters of the Kurung River in Koloriang, Kurung Kumey district on Saturday.
The missing driver of the ill-fated vehicle has been identified as Merung Bahadur Limbu, aged 42, a resident of Gohpur, Assam, and a father of three children. Limbu's fate remains uncertain as search and rescue operations continue. Meanwhile, Donesh Sobar, a handyman accompanying the driver, miraculously survived the ordeal, albeit with minor leg injuries requiring stitches.
According to Superintendent of Police Kurung Kumey, Bomken Basar, the pickup truck was en route to Nangram Village via the Parsi Parlo PMGSY road when tragedy struck. The vehicle encountered a weak portion of the road, known as a sliding zone, due to continuous soil erosion. A tractor had crossed this precarious stretch earlier, further destabilizing the soil. Subsequently, the pickup truck lost traction, careening down the loose soil and plunging into the depths of the Kurung River.
Despite the challenging conditions posed by the heavy current of the river, a collaborative effort involving the Border Roads Organization (BRO), district administration, police department, Koloriang market association members, and concerned citizens successfully retrieved the heavily damaged vehicle using specialized equipment. However unfortunately, the driver of the ill-fated truck is still untraceable, feared to have been swept away by the strong currents downstream, added the SP.
Search and rescue operations are underway, with neighbouring police stations in Sangram, Palin, and other districts mobilized to assist in locating Limbu's body. The incident occurred near the Kurung Bridge, marking the entry point to Koloriang town and the tri-junction leading to a road connecting Parsi Parlo town. Authorities urge caution in navigating the area, especially considering the precarious road conditions exacerbated by soil erosion, added the SP.
