AALO, Sep 6: In a critical step towards addressing the looming environmental issues, the National Programme on Climate Change & Human Health (NPCCHH) West Siang unit has kick started a week-long awareness programme. This initiative, happening just before the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Sky, is centered at the Old Market Community Hall in Aalo. Here, locals are coming together to discuss the urgent problem of plastic waste and how it's harming the surroundings.
Dr. Tsering Wangmu, DSO and DNO, emphasized the harmful effects of air pollution on people's health. She encouraged the community to actively participate in efforts to protect the environment, fostering a dialogue that highlights the need for immediate action and community involvement.
Resource person Er Hali Welly, EE, UD, shared success stories from cities like Bangalore and Alappuzha, where decentralized solid waste management practices have been implemented effectively at both household and community levels. These practices have eased the load on centralized waste disposal systems significantly.
He elucidated the concept of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle in a basic and simple manner, aiming to facilitate easy understanding among the attendees. Welly insisted on initiating change from one's own home, urging the audience not to mix wet and dry waste, a practice that greatly enhances the efficacy of recycling processes. He highlighted the critical role of grassroots awareness in establishing a cleaner environment, urging individuals to imbibe a sense of responsibility in their daily habits.
Later the Market Secretary B Zirdo reinforced the necessity for community unity in addressing the widespread issue of plastic pollution. He underscored the omnipresence of plastic waste and its adverse impact on natural resources, calling upon the community to unite in this fight.
The programme witnessed participation from hundreds of shopkeepers, creating an atmosphere brimming with engagement and proactive discussions.
It featured an interactive session where questions were answered and doubts cleared, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and encouraging active participation from community members.
