Gerukamukh, Jun 12: The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) today clarified that there is no risk to the Subansiri Dam amid apprehensions raised in sections of the media about the possible damage to the dam structure during the recent heavy rains which had caused widespread havoc in Arunachal Pradesh. Media reports had claimed damage to the Subansiri Dam Spillway Block S6 during this monsoon season and raised apprehensions regarding the risk to the dam structure.
The NHPC in its clarification said that only minor damages to the spillway lip portion have occurred. During monsoon season, river flow is accompanied with silt, wooden logs and boulders. Rolling of the boulders and wooden logs causes minor damages on the upper surface of the spillway glacis and lip portion during the passing of the river flow from the spillway gates. The functionality of dam is not affected with such minor damages during monsoon season. After passing of the monsoon season, the area shall be inspected and minor damages occurred shall be repaired and restored as a general practice in Hydroelectric Project, said SP Mazumder, DGM (PR), NHPC.
