KHONSA, Jul 31: Nine children between the ages of 3-10 yrs have died due to diarrhoea outbreak in Lazu circle of Tirap district over the past few days. Pongkong has been the worst hit with seven deaths while Longliang reported two fatalities.
Situation is being constantly monitored by local MLA Sri W. Sawin, DC Tirap Sri Tato Mize & DMO Dr.N.Lowang. Medical Team is being arranged to station at Lazu for constant examination & treatment.

Arrangements have been made to transport serious patients from Pongkong, Longliang and nearby villages to the District Hospital in Khonsa.The deputy commissioner has further instructed the medical team to stay at the village community hall to monitor the situation closely and be available round-the-clock for any emergency requirements.
Water sample has been collected and sent for lab test by PHED Khonsa division from the affected area. Stool sample has been sent for lab test by the district medical team.
Meanwhile, student union and panchayat leaders have been engaged to create awareness and convince the villagers to cooperate with the medical team and render their services. Reportedly, the medical team earlier had a hard time convincing the villagers to come for test and symptom assessment as they (villagers) believed it to be associated with evil spirit. 
According to medical officer PHC Lazu, the situation is improving as there has been no further death report.
