PONGCHAU, May 3  : The RWD, Science & Technology Minister and Pongchau-Wakka local MLA Honchun Ngandam has urged the Wancho community to preserve age old cultural heritage for protection of identity.
He was addressing a huge gathering on the occasion of installation of log drum (musical instrument) programme at Khasa village in Ponchau circle of Longding district on Tuesday. The log drum is one of the biggest musical instrument and basically found in TLC region and some part of Nagaland and basically used by the people of Wancho, Nocte, Tutsa and few tribes of Nagaland. 
This is an important instrument being used in old day to pass message and immediate information the village in view of attack on village, epidemic, social and important gathering. The Log drum were kept at Pa (Morong) place where male members gather, discuses and take decision for wellbeing of village and its people. So this practice needs to be preserved and promoted even in present days as it is attached with our habits and culture and our culture is our identity, he said.
Terming drugs as deadly, Ngandam said  time has come to work together to eradicate the menace.
He also spoke about the duty and responsibility of the government and people adding "without proper support and cooperation and responsibility of people no developmental can be achieved." 
Attending the function as guest of honour, Longding Deputy Commissioner Bani Lego expressed concern on the scarcity of drinking water and catchment areas. "It is the responsibility of the general public to leave the hilltops and start with plantation and forestry activity and avoid jhum cultivation slowly so that the catchment areas remain intact and we may be able to get perennial water supply and people do not face water scarcity," he said.
