Tawang, Sep 2: A high-level delegation from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) visited Tawang today to review and strengthen the district’s disaster preparedness and response mechanisms. The meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner  Namgyal Angmo was attended by senior officials from NDMA, SDMA, district administration, and various line departments.
The purpose of the visit was to:
Understand the functioning of SDMA and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) from a disaster risk perspective.
Assist districts in enhancing preparedness and response systems.
Review the status of State and District Disaster Management Plans (SDMP/DDMP).
Share disaster-related schemes, SOPs, and guidelines of NDMA.
Identify and promote best practices in disaster documentation.
The visiting delegation included Joint Advisor NDMA P.K. Singh, Under Secretary NDMA Saroj Kujur, Consultants NDMA Dr. Vajeem Iqbal and Dr. Mili, Consultant SDMA Damchin Norbu, and Assistant Director SDMA. From the district administration, Superintendent of Police Tawang Dr. D.W. Thongon, AC-cum-Ic ADC Tawang S.W. Mosobi, and other officers from line departments participated.
In her welcome address, ADC Sangey Wangmu Mosobi expressed regret over the travel difficulties faced by the visiting officials due to incessant rains, noting that such conditions are a regular challenge for the people of Tawang—snow and ice in winter, and rain with mudslides in summer.
NDMA Consultant Dr. Vajeem Iqbal outlined the purpose of the visit and elaborated on various national schemes and measures for disaster relief. DC Tawang briefed the gathering on the district’s ongoing disaster preparedness initiatives, including last year’s glacial lake outburst expeditions and future plans to survey additional lakes.
During discussions, Jt. Advisor PK Singhsought inputs from line departments regarding their preparedness plans and gaps.
The meeting concluded with words of gratitude from DDMO,Tawang Genden Tsomu.
The delegation later inspected key sites across the district to assess ground realities.
The visit is expected to pave the way for more robust disaster management practices in Tawang, with a stronger focus on preparedness, inter-departmental coordination, and community awareness.
