ITANAGAR, Jun 29: In alignment with India’s 19th National Statistics Day, Department of Economic and statistics, Arunachal Pradesh celebrated the National Statistics Day here at Golden Jubilee Banquet, Itanagar hall today.
It is observed annually to honour the birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, considered the father of Indian statistics. The central theme this year, 75 Years of National Sample Survey highlighted the invaluable contribution of the National Sample Survey (NSS) in supporting evidence-based governance since its inception.
S K Nayak, VC RGU while appreciating the works of Field officers, said Field officers play a crucial
role in raising public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation for national development.
They are instrumental in organizing events like seminars, quiz shows, and debates, particularly at the local level, to educate citizens, especially the younger generation, about the significance of statistical data.
Earlier, Bebing Megu, Director of Economics and Statistics highlighted the significant contributions of Prof PC Mahalanobis, an eminent Indian scientist and statistician noting his development of the Mahalanobis distance and his role as a member of India’s first planning commission.
Stressing the importance of accurate statistical data, he emphasized its crucial role in achieving developmental goals, therefore suggested creating awareness amongst people of the state.
The Director also, reiterated the importance of reliable data for informed policy-making, especially as India marks 75 years of NSS that shape socio-economic strategies.
The event included prize distribution to the winners of essay writing competition which was conducted earlier for College level, higher secondary and secondary students with Certificates and cash prizes.
A compressive book on National Sample Survey Report on Village Level development indicator-2022 was also released on the occasion.
