Itanagar, Jul 24: As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, a National Seminar titled “50 Years of Democratic Journey in Arunachal Pradesh: Indigenous Governance and Modern Legislature” was held on Thursday at the D.K. Auditorium, Assembly Secretariat, Itanagar.
Organised in collaboration with the Arunachal Institute of Tribal Studies (AITS), Rajiv Gandhi University, the seminar brought together legislators, scholars, writers, and civil society members to reflect on the state’s democratic evolution over the past five decades.
In his address, Speaker Tesam Pongte highlighted the transformation of the Assembly since its inception as a Provisional Legislative Assembly on August 15, 1975, leading to full statehood in 1987. He described the Assembly as a vital platform for representing the aspirations of tribal communities, women and youth.
The Speaker remarked that the Legislative Assembly has been the epicenter of policymaking and the guardian of constitutional values for the past five decades. He also urged all stakeholders to work collectively for a more inclusive and progressive Arunachal Pradesh.
The keynote address was delivered by noted sociologist and anthropologist Prof. Virginius Xaxa, former professor at the Delhi School of Economics and Chairperson of the Government of India’s High-Level Committee on the Status of Tribal Communities.
Rajiv Gandhi University Vice Chancellor Prof. S.K. Nayak congratulated the people of Arunachal Pradesh on the 50-year milestone. AITS Director Prof. Jumyir Basar briefed the gathering on the seminar’s objectives. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Tadar Meena, Secretary, Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
