TAWANG, Jan 18: National Road Safety Month which aims to create awareness on road safety and reduce road accidents was launched today here at the old market by Tawang MLA Tsering Tashi.
The inaugural event was organized by the district transport office in collaboration with the District Administration and District Police. Chairman, DOKAa (Chosrig Affairs) Jambey Wangdi, Deputy Commissioner Sang Phuntsok, Commander Tawang Brigade Brig. VK Jagtap, Zila Chairperson Leki Gombu, SP B. Kamduk along with other senior officers, public leaders and citizens attended the function. EAC-cum-District Transport Officer Choiki Dondup informed the programme was earlier conducted for one week only, but taking into consideration the increasing number of daily road accidents, it has been extended to a month. The SP while informing that every year more than one lakh fifty thousand people die in road accidents in the country, made the appeal to drive carefully obeying traffic rules and avoid drinking while driving. Haphazard parking is one of the reasons for road accidents, the DC said while requesting all vehicle owners to create parking places especially in market areas, informing along with that no vehicles will be allowed to park on roadsides in the days to come. The DA is coming up with a parking plan on payment basis soon, he added.
The MLA while seeking citizens’ cooperation for making the roads of the district safer which is a major tourist attraction, stressed on proper planning to ensure smooth vehicular movement in township area. He further assured that over the next two years condition of roads in the township will improve after completion of CC roads from the market area up to Tawang monastery. He later distributed helmets to the bike riders.
