ITANAGAR, Aug 13: The Department of Public Libraries on Saturday celebrated the National Librarian’s Day, commemorating the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (1892-1972), who is known as the ‘Father of Library Science’.

August 12th is celebrated every year as the National Librarian’s Day in remembrance of the ‘national professor of library science’ Dr SR Ranganathan, who had spearheaded the library movement in India.

The officials and staff members of the Public Libraries department under the direction of Director Jotom Borang celebrated the day in a function at the State Central Library premises here.

Junior Librarian BB Lal, while giving a brief account on the life and contributions of Dr Ranganathan, in his keynote address, said that being a librarian we should draw inspiration from his life and deliver better services in our field.

Underlining the importance of public libraries, he said, a library can play an important role in imparting value of education and stressed on opening quality library across the state. He also said that the role of librarian is continuously evolving to meet the social and technological needs.

Earlier, the Library officials and staff led by the Assistant Director GT Jini paid floral tributes to Dr Ranganathan and recalled his contributions.
