ITANAGAR, Aug 7: The 9th National Handloom Day was celebrated in a befitting manner today at the Department of Textiles and Handicrafts, which saw huge participation from local weavers and artisans. The event was organised by the Weavers’ Service Centre, Extension Centre Itanagar of WSC Guwahati, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India.
Mayor Tame Phassang in his address said that the Central and the State Government are coming up with various schemes for local artisans and weavers and urged them to avail the opportunity while also seeking cooperation of all to promote them. He lauded the local weavers and artisans who through their hard work, dedication and talent have kept the rich tradition of weaving and arts alive.
EAC Khoda Lasa said that there is need to promote local weavers to preserve and promote traditional crafts. "In this era of modernisation, we must remember the significance of supporting our local weavers and handloom industries. By doing so, we not only contribute to the growth of our economy but also safeguard our cultural heritage for generations to come," he said.
Special invitee renowned designer cum Artist Taba Yall Nabam while sharing her success story, told the participants how her passion for designing  and weaving led to the creation of 'Khinam', a celebrated brand of Arunachal. She emphasised on the need to bring designers, weavers and artisans of the state to the forefront, so that it inspires others.
Utpal Ch. Baro, Assistant Director WSC Itanagar, said the occasion holds great significance for our cultural heritage and the countless artisans who have preserved the art of handloom weaving through generations. He highlighted how the Swadeshi Movement led to encouraging the use of locally produced handloom textiles.
Mibin Dirchi (HPO) Handicrafts Service Centre, Itanagar provided a detailed  explanation about the types of handicraft items and also highlighted about the  various schemes to support and promote artisans. She also explained about the marketing support and service scheme and skill development in handicraft sector. 
During the event, certificate for CATD, weavers Yarn Passbook, weavers Artisan Card and HSS to the beneficiaries were also distributed.
