Tawang, Mar 30: In a significant step towards promoting cash crop cultivation alongside traditional field crops, MLA Tawang, Namgey Tsering, distributed hybrid vegetable seeds and organic liquid manure to local farmers.
The distribution programme, organised by District Agriculture Office, in the conference hall of the DC office Tawang, was funded under the MLA Local Area Development (LAD) fund for 2024-25.
The event witnessed the presence of Deputy Commissioner Tawang Kanki Darang, District Agriculture Officer Toli Bam, EAC Tsering Choden, Chairman Tawang LAMPS Dorjee Norbu, prominent public leaders including Pema Chowang and Nawang Tenzin, senior officers from the Agriculture Department, Gaon Burahs, PRI leaders, and local farmers.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Namgey Tsering encouraged farmers to enhance vegetable cultivation to boost their income. He emphasised the importance of organic farming and urged them to minimise the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Highlighting the availability of a ready market for local produce, he assured farmers of opportunities to sell their vegetables and horticultural products to the Army and paramilitary forces. Additionally, he informed them about the upcoming cold storage facility in the district, which will help in preserving surplus vegetables and reducing post-harvest losses.
Deputy Commissioner Kanki Darang shared that the district administration, in collaboration with the Agriculture Department, has been coordinating with the Army and paramilitary forces to procure vegetables directly from local farmers. He also mentioned that while the seeds and manure had been procured earlier under the MLA LAD fund, the distribution event had been delayed due to the Lossar festival.
