NAHARLAGUN, May 11: Batch wise six day training on Navjaat Shishu Suraksha Karyakarm (NSSK) commenced today at state training hall National Health Mission office in three different batches for Medical officers, staff nurses and ANMs.

Organized by the AP State Health Society, the training aims to equip healthcare providers with knowledge and skill required to handle neonatal cases in most efficient way.

Citing that in Infant Mortality Rate, two third deaths are due to neonatal mortality, Nodal officer NHM Dr. D Padung, said to save the life of a neonatal a minute after birth is most critical and important. Meanwhile he informed as per National Family Health Survey 2015-16, infant mortality rate is 23 % per thousand live births therefore to reduce the mortality rate the target should be to reduce the IMR at minimal level in the state. Focusing on Birth Asphyxia, he said sepsis, premature births and hypothermia are some major cause for infant mortality rate and said this training will help to fill the gap and address the major causes of neonatal mortality.

Senior Paediatrician, Tomo Riba State Hospital, Dr Hibu Tagyungurged all the participants to clear their doubts before leaving for the districts. ‘In most neonates 90% routine care is required, in few 9% basic initial steps of resuscitation are enough while in 1 % active resuscitative measures are needed. If we are able to protect the neonates during this period it will ensure survival of new born babies,’ he added.

Nodal Officer Training (NHM) Dr T Taku also addressed the programme.
