PAPU HILLS, May 7: In a swift and decisive action, Papu Hills Police apprehended a 35-year-old man on charges of molestation and illegal possession of firearm. The arrest comes a day after a woman lodged a complaint alleging physical assault and an attempted molestation at Naharlagun Railway Station.
According to the complaint filed on May 6, the 26-year-old victim had returned from Guwahati with the wife of the accused, identified as Chello Kalar. Upon their arrival at Naharlagun Railway Station, the accused allegedly confronted the woman without provocation, physically assaulted her, and attempted to molest her. When she resisted, he reportedly brandished a pistol, chased her, and used obscene language and gestures that outraged her modesty. The victim managed to flee and took refuge inside the railway station premises before alerting her family.
Following the complaint, a case was promptly registered under PH PS Case No. 56/25 U/S 74/329(4)/131/351(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) read with Section 25(1)(b) of the Arms Act.
Taking swift action, Superintendent of Police Naharlagun, Mihin Gambo, formed a special team comprising OC Incharge Inspector Gejum Basar, Investigating Officer SI AK Jha, SI Tase Bagang, and constables Tepa Sikon and Pappu Halder. The operation was carried out under the supervision of SDPO Naharlagun, Rishi Longdo.
Through a combination of technical surveillance and intelligence inputs, the accused, who was residing in Karsingsa, was tracked and arrested on May 7 after a brief pursuit. During interrogation, he confessed to threatening the victim and admitted to possessing an unlicensed 7.65 mm pistol along with six live rounds and a magazine.    
The police recovered the firearm, ammunition, and a black pistol pouch from his residence. The accused is currently in custody, and further investigation is underway,stated a release.
