DOIMUKH, Dec 4: Police has arrested a man for the murder of a woman whom the accused reportedly had a love interest; the man was apprehended from Hosur, Tamil Nadu after police analysed call details record.
In a shocking incident on December 27 last, a verbal report was received by Doimukh Police Station (PS) regarding unusual earth filling near an under-construction building wall in Yupia-I, Papum Pare District, Arunachal Pradesh. Upon verification, police discovered a red woolen cloth protruding from the site. Upon closer inspection, it was found to cover a female body.
Speaking to the media, superintendent of police , Papumpare Taru Gusar informed that, the deceased was identified as Janmoni Das, employed as a housekeeping staff at R&T Powerol, Lekhi, Naharlagun. Her upper body was covered by her clothing, while her lower body was unclothed except for socks. A portion of a blue dungaree was tied around her neck, suggesting death by strangulation. Since the discovery occurred after sunset, the inquest and post-mortem examination (PME) were conducted the next day at TRIH&MS Naharlagun, with no apparent external injuries noted.
Based on a complaint from R&T Powerol Manager Smti Duyu Meena, a case (DMK PS Case No. 181/24) was registered under Section 302 IPC. Sub-Inspector M.K. Rai was assigned to lead the investigation.
During the investigation, the Call Detail Records (CDR) of the deceased revealed that the last call was made to her number on December 26, 2024, at 8:33 PM, from 6002613515, which was later switched off. Co-workers at the construction site identified the number as belonging to Mofijul Hoque, a laborer who had been missing since the morning of December 27, 2024.
CCTV footage from a nearby building showed Janmoni Das arriving at the location in a tempo at approximately 8:30 PM. She was received by two individuals, identified as Mofijul Hoque (39) of Bhandara, Bongaigaon District, Assam, and Rahul Amin from the Laluk area. Rahul Amin reportedly paid the tempo fare on behalf of Mofijul Hoque.
Rahul Amin was arrested on December 30, 2024, and placed in four days of police custody. During interrogation, he disclosed that Mofijul Hoque had arranged for the victim's visit and asked him to pay the tempo fare due to a lack of digital payment access.
Technical assistance tracked a new phone number used by Mofijul Hoque, which was active in Bengaluru, Karnataka. A police team led by SDPO Doimukh and comprising SI M.K. Rai and others, traced the accused to Hosur, Tamil Nadu, under Nallur PS jurisdiction. With the assistance of local police, Mofijul Hoque was apprehended on January 3, 2025, at 2:15 AM.
Hoque had started working as a security guard at a residential complex in Hosur on January 1, 2025, after fleeing from Arunachal Pradesh. He was arrested and transit remand for four days was obtained from the Judicial Magistrate in Hosur.
The police are now awaiting PME and forensic lab reports, which may lead to the addition of charges, including sexual assault. Investigations continue to uncover additional suspects, motives, and accomplices involved in the crime.
The accused, Mofijul Hoque, has confessed to committing the crime, though a detailed report is still awaited. According to his statement, Hoque had a love interest in the deceased but claimed he discovered that she was involved with another man too. This revelation reportedly drove him to take the extreme step, stated SP.
