KHONSA, Aug 31: Tirap Police in collaboration with Darjeeling police apprehended an individual responsible for a series of telephonic extortions in Tirap district. The accused Karim Khan, had been operating under the false identity of SS Capt Rocky Thapa, claiming affiliation with NSCN (K-YA). The coordinated police action led to the arrest of the accused from Sukhna, West Bengal.
The district police had been receiving reports of telephonic extortions originating from specific phone numbers, purportedly associated with NSCN (K-YA). The suspect, using the name Rocky Thapa, had been making demands for political assistance and supplies for NSCN (K-YA) party members in Tirap.
Following a meticulous investigation, the accused was traced to Sukhna near Darjeeling and was taken into custody. Mobile phones, SIM cards used in the extortion calls were also recovered.
The accused's modus operandi involved exploiting the identity of someone he had encountered during his time at Khonsa Jail in 2020. After his release in April 2021, he falsely assumed the identity of Rocky Thapa to carry out extortion activities. The accused has confessed to extorting more than 2 lakhs rupees thus far. The investigation is ongoing, delving into the full extent of his actions.
The accused has had previous involvements in various criminal cases, including theft, arms-related offenses, and extortion. His criminal history includes cases registered under different police stations, indicating a pattern of unlawful activities.
The successful resolution of this case was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Tirap police team, led by DySP Togum Gonggo and SI Sheychin Chena.
The Darjeeling police's invaluable cooperation, facilitated by SP Tirap Rahul Gupta, underscores the importance of inter-state police coordination.
The SP urged residents of Tirap district to promptly report any incidents of extortion calls to the district police. He assured the community that such extortionists will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law, stated a release.
