ITANAGAR, Jan 7: First Lady of Arunachal Pradesh Neelam Misra has urged the state’s womenfolk to engage themselves in the traditional art of loin loom weaving on a larger scale for becoming economically Atma Nirbhar (self-reliant).
The First Lady made the appeal today while interacting with a group of women led by Programme and Administration Director, Centre for Cultural Research & Documentation (CCRD), Naharlagun Moyir Riba Gamlin. Observing that as every tribe of the state has their own pattern of traditional attires, the First Lady suggested they must develop their own scarf which will represent and reflect their unique tribal designs and patterns. She called upon the people, particularly the government departments and non-government organizations to procure, use and promote these loin loom weaved scarfs during functions and festivals. Such a gesture will reinforce the spirit of ‘Vocal for Local’ and go a long way in making the weavers who are mostly rural women financially independent, she added. Gamlin informed that inspired by ‘Bunayi ki Rangin Duniya’, a documentary made by the First Lady, a group of women from Doimukh, Basar, Aalo and Tato started a Self Help Group and are weaving scarfs of some of the tribes using their respective designs and patterns under the ‘Dream Weaves’ project with guidance from the CCRD.
It is pertinent to mention that the First Lady has been pursuing her passion of loin loom weaving which she learnt after coming to Arunachal Pradesh and had advocated for earmarking of spaces in the premises of State Emporium and State Museum where live demonstrations of original loin loom weaving by the tribes can be made.
She has also been vocal for these live demonstrations in all cottage industries and textile and handicraft programmes organised in the state.
