Shergaon, Jan 15: A waste segregation unit was inaugurated today at Shergaon, West Kameng to be run and managed by local NGO Garung Thuk.  The local NGO with the help of Shergaon Village Council plans to run waste management for the entire village.
ADC Rupa, Lobsang Tsetan appreciated the efforts of the NGO and promised to extend all the necessary help from administration to run the waste management system in the village which has recently seen huge tourist inflow.
The frequent cleanliness drives are fine, but what next? Where does all the garbage go, said Ledo Thungon, chairman of the NGO. "We plan to segregate the waste at source, collect the waste and bring it to the segregation unit. The NGO has installed waste bin with anti-topple stands in the village from its own resources. The NGO plans to develop a sustainable model of waste management without harming the environment  keeping in mind reduce, reuse and recycle," he said.
Rinchong Lama, Chairman, Shergaon Village Council said the NGO has been working very hard towards the development of the village since its inception 8 years ago. Growing population and adoption of modern lifestyles has increased waste generation in the village, he said adding that the project is much needed at this time.
