Rono Hills, Nov 28: A leadership engagement workshop was held for Principals and Headmasters/Headmistresses from 12 private and government schools under the Itanagar Capital Region and Papumpare district. The workshop was organized as part of ICMR’s Multistate Implementation Research Study on Suicide Risk Reduction and Improving Mental Wellbeing among School and College Students, undertaken by AITS, RGU, and funded by ICMR in collaboration with the Department of School Education on 28th November.
The session focused on institutional preparedness and the development of necessary protocol documents. Participants discussed the urgent need for clear guidelines to manage crisis situations—such as cases of completed suicide, attempted suicide, or identification of students at high risk.
Several school heads shared past incidents of suicide, attempted suicide, and cases involving students with strong suicidal ideation. While many leaders are making personal efforts to support students and engage with parents, none of the institutions currently have formal protocols or standard procedures for handling such situations.
The workshop also highlighted how a suicide can create a ripple effect, placing classmates, friends, and family members at heightened risk. Addressing this vulnerable environment through a structured institutional response is essential for reducing suicide risk on campus.
The participant institutions which were onboarded to the project for building a resilient campus through mental wellbeing are: Alphabet Public Schoo, Nirjuli, Alphabet Girl’s Residential School, Nirjulu, Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Nirjuli, VKV, Nirjuli, Little Star School, Papunalah, Abotani Vidya Niketan, Paching, Little Rose School, Naharlagun, Govt. Sec. School, Pachin, Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Polo Colony, PMSHRI Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Doimukh, Govt. Sec. School, G-Sector Naharlagun, St. Thomas Residential School, Naharlagun and VKV, PTC Banderdewa. (HS)
