PASIGHAT, Dec 10: Despite massive production, Kiwi growers in West Kameng district are struggling to export the much sought after fruit due to lack of packaging knowledge.
West Kameng is the largest producer of Kiwi in the State which accounted for 45% of total production during the year 2016-17 grown in a total area of 1184 hectares and total production amounting to 4284.40 MT. However, Kiwi farmers are unable to export it due to lack of proper packaging knowledge, said GP Dubey, District Horticulture Officer, Bomdila.
Dubey who inaugurated a two day awareness workshop cum training programme on ‘Packaging of Kiwi’ on Monday at Dirang in West Kameng informed that in spite of huge potential for export, no export could be done by the local Kiwi farmers of the district due to lack of proper knowledge of various techniques of packaging. He hoped that the training program will help local farmers to address this issue.
The awareness programme was organized by the Department of Trade & Commerce, Government of Arunachal Pradesh and assisted locally by a Local NGO, M/s 99 Enterprise of India, Dirang. The Indian Institute of Packaging, Kolkata, Dy. Director & Branch Head, Bidhan Das, and Assistant Director N. Nataraj, attended as resource persons and trained the Kiwi farmers about various packaging techniques. Both reiterated that packaging is necessary for any product to retain its original quality and to protect from further damages while transportation from source to market. Proper packaging is also essential for export of products to other countries, the duo emphasised.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director, Trade & Commerce, Sonyung Modi, who led the department in organizing the programme at Dirang said that the department organized the training at farmer’s doorstep to give maximum benefit to actual Kiwi growers as they are busy in their farms and not in a position to attend such important training programme at distant places.
