ITANAGAR, Nov 4: A team of the Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA) today inspected the District Jail, Jully in the state capital and apprised the inmates of their right to avail free legal aid from Legal Services Institutions.
APSLSA Member Secretary Yomge Ado, who led a team of Legal Aid Counsels, Jail visiting Lawyer, Para Legal Volunteers and officials, held a meeting with the Jail Authority, Tojo Karga, IPS, Dy. Inspector General of Jail –cum- Superintendent of Jail HQ, Jully and Doctor & medical staff of the prison. During the meeting issues regarding providing of timely free legal assistance to the UTPs & Convicts granted under Section 12 of Legal Services Authority Act, 1987 and various issues of the jail like medical attention, food, hygiene, health, safety etc., of the inmates were raised.
During the interaction, Ado apprised them about their rights to avail free legal aid from the Legal Services Institutions and provisions under which prisoners can be effectively represented in the Courts, which Legal Services Authority will provide Legal Aid Counsels to them free of cost.
All persons in custody are entitled to legal aid under Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. One of the crucial and core activity of the Legal Services Institutions is providing of legal aid and to ensure that every prisoner is provided timely free legal aid as mandated under National Legal Services Authority (NALSA)’s Free and competent Legal Services schemes and regulations.
236 inmates including UTPs & Convicts were present at the time of jail inspection, although the total intake capacity of the prison is only of 177 prisoners, thereby the jail was overcrowded by 59 inmates. The Legal Services Authority also suggested for de-congestion of Jail and facilitate basic education especially to long term inmates.
