ITANAGAR, Sep 5: In a significant achievement, the Itanagar Police has successfully apprehended members of a well-organized gang responsible for a spate of two-wheeler thefts in the Capital City since 2019. The operation, marked by precision and dedication, resulted in the arrest of several key gang members and the recovery of a substantial number of stolen vehicles.
Superintendent of Police, Itanagar, Rohit Rajbir Singh while speaking to the media disclosed that, the breakthrough in this case dates back to June 15, 2023, when Takio Kanu, a resident of Sekay Colony, Itanagar, reported the theft of his motorcycle. The incident occurred during the night of June 14-15, prompting Kanu to file a formal complaint. Itanagar PS Case No.135/23 was registered under sections 379/34 IPC and assigned to Inspector N. Nishant for investigation.
The turning point in the case was the fact that Kanu's stolen bike was equipped with a GPS tracking system. The Itanagar Police leveraged this technology to trace the stolen motorcycle to Dhenudhara Village, Gohpur (Assam) on the very same day, June 15 last.
Following the successful recovery, law enforcement initiated technical surveillance on potential suspects and engaged human intelligence sources to gather critical information. A meticulous scientific pattern analysis of two-wheeler theft incidents unveiled the existence of a well-organized gang of thieves operating in the capital city since 2019.
The Itanagar Police intensified its efforts and identified all four members of the gang: Bisho Mili, Pranab Kutum-I, Pranab Kutum-II, and Apollo Pegu, all from Assam. On July 24, 2023, the Chimpu Police Station team successfully apprehended the gang's leader, Bisho Mili.
During the interrogation, the gang members confessed to their involvement in nearly 30 two-wheeler theft attempts in the last four months alone, with several instances of successful thefts. The gang had a distinctive modus operandi, enabling them to steal vehicles either on demand or opportunistically. These stolen vehicles were then sold at significantly reduced prices.
The culmination of the Itanagar Police'  rigorous efforts resulted in the recovery of an astonishing 53 stolen two-wheelers, taken from various areas within the Capital. Additionally,  two mobile phones used by the gang for coordination and communication were also seized as evidence,stated SP.
