ITANAGAR, Jul 17: The Itanagar Biological Park (Itanagar Zoo) in Arunachal Pradesh has received a pair of adult Royal Bengal Tigers and three freshwater Gharials from Nandankanan Zoo in Odisha. The animals arrived on Monday as part of an approved animal exchange program between the two zoos.
The tigers and gharials were welcomed at Itanagar Biological Park by the park's director, along with the presence of the Principal Secretary (EF&CC), Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), and other senior officers from the Department. In exchange for these animals, Itanagar Biological Park has provided Hoolock Gibbons and Leopard Cats to Nandankanan Zoo.
Arunachal Pradesh is known for its diverse habitats that support various big cat species, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, Snow Leopard, Common Leopard, and Clouded Leopard. The addition of two tigers to the zoo will help raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation.
The wildlife assets were received from Nandankanan Zoo and began their journey on July 14, arriving at Itanagar on July 17. The zoo has created healthy habitats to accommodate the tigers and gharials, and efforts are underway to modernize and maintain high-quality natural standards in the zoo.
Itanagar Biological Park is a significant biological asset for the state of Arunachal Pradesh, housing over 30 mammal species, 12 bird species, and 4 reptile species. The facility also operates a rescue center under veterinary supervision to care for rescued wild animals, stated a release.
