ITANAGAR, Aug 12: Arunachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society, in collaboration with VKV School, Nirjuli, organised the International Youth Day at Nirjuli on Saturday.
MLA Talem Taboh, while attending the program as the Chief Guest, asked students to be disciplined and focussed on their career. Stressed on the role of youth, he said that they are the future of our society, state and nation. If youth are secure, our nation is secured. If youth are hardworking no one can stop the progress of our nation, he added.
Speaking on the challenges of drug menace in the state, Taboh said that the government of Arunachal Pradesh under the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu is committed to control drug menace in the state by any means. He asked the youth to be vigilant and stay away from drug abuse.
APSACS Project Director Dr. Riken Rina said that there is alarming rise in the incidence of drug abuse in the state for the last few years which in turn has contributed in the rise of HIV positivity. Stating that the youth are vulnerable to drug abuse and HIV, he said that proper awareness should be created to save the young generation so that they do not fall into the trap of drug abuse. To control the menace of drug abuse and HIV, we all must join hands and fight united against it, he said.
APSACS Joint Director IEC, Tashor Pali, while speaking on the occasion said that HIV/AIDS neither have a vaccine, nor have definite cure so far. Knowledge is the only vaccine and cure for HIV. He urged the youth to arm themselves with proper knowledge to prevent HIV. He also asked the youth to create a chain of information to prevent the further spread of HIV.
While highlighting the objective of International Youth Day, Pali said that the United Nations General Assembly officially declared August 12 as Youth Day in 1999. Since then, this day has been used to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the youth and ways of overcoming them, as well as to highlight the achievements of young people. India with more than 60 percent youth out of its total population, have the world’s youngest population, which is a big plus point for our country. Healthy youth only can ensure a healthy nation, he added.
