PASIGHAT, Sep 19: After the recent letter to Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh by Chief Minister Pema Khandu apprising of the grim flood situation in East Siang district, Secretary, Disaster Management, Government of Arunachal Pradesh also met Union Minister of State for Home on Tuesday and sought for early visit of Inter-Ministerial Central Team to inspect the district.

Bidol Tayeng, Secretary, Disaster Management called on Rijiju  and apprised him of the situation while referring to the Chief Minister’s earlier letter to the Home Ministry. Tayeng has also directed Director, Disaster Management to assess property, crop and other agricultural land damages and also need of flood protection works along the River Siang before the central team visits the area.

Meanwhile, when contacted, MoS Home, Kiren Rijiju said that, an Inter—Ministerial Central Team will be sent soon to assess the damages, but he also informed that, his ministry is yet to receive the requisition letter from the concern department of disaster from Arunachal Pradesh Government.

When asked about whether the government of India is taking up the matter of large volume of water released in the Siang, Rijiju clarified that, the central government is getting the data from its Chinese counterpart while adding that the flash flood in Siang River was due to heavy flood in other catchment rivers of the Tsangpo river in Tibet.

When asked if the dams constructed in the Siang River at Tibet would pose a threat to India and likelihood of China using Siang river as weapon at the time of war like situation, Rijiju said that, the dams constructed on Tsangpo (Siang) are run-of-the-river and as per Chinese government, it doesn’t pose any threat.

Regarding dredging of the river as appealed by Lok Sabha MP from Arunachal East, Ninong Ering to Prime Minster, Narendra Modi,  Rijiju said that the team of expert visiting the East Siang district will look into the requirements based on which further decision will be taken.
