ITANAGAR, Jul 18: In a significant decision aimed at uplifting the dignity and welfare of its frontline workers, the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC), under the leadership of Mayor Tamme Phassang, has unanimously resolved to enhance the salaries of its 204 ground staff. The resolution was passed during a special session held today, attended by all Corporators and officials of the IMC.
Addressing the media after the session, Mayor Phassang emphasized the crucial role played by ground workers in maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the city. “They are the real backbone of IMC. While we sleep, they are out collecting the garbage and ensuring our city remains clean. It is unfortunate that despite their hard work, their salaries remain meagre,” he stated.
The Mayor further informed that the entire IMC team, including officials and corporators, has decided to push for the enhancement of ground staff salaries, bringing them on par with other employees of similar grade in different government departments. “We are happy to share that the Urban Local Bodies Minister, Balo Raja, has expressed strong support for this resolution and acknowledged that IMC staff deserve salary parity,” he added.
He further appealed to the Secretary, the Commissioner, and all other concerned officials of ULB to support the resolution.
On the topic of Swachh Survekshan, Mayor Phassang highlighted the importance of public participation in achieving a cleaner city. “Unless citizens join hands with IMC, our dream of a clean and green Itanagar cannot be fulfilled. We must follow the example of Indore – India’s cleanest city – where people practice Jan Bhagidari (public participation) and support municipal efforts instead of relying solely on the Corporation.”
